Gentle River
Gentle River first formed in 1994 as a result of the members' desires to share not only their love of music but also God's love and His message with others. Since then, Gentle River has thrilled audiences at festivals and churches in the North Florida and South Georgia region and has developed not only a great gospel sound but a riveting bluegrass sound with stunning vocals.

Darrell Crosby was born September 29, 1946 in Opelika, Alabama. He plays mandolin and sings bass, baritone and lead vocals. His family moved to Tallahassee, Florida when he was young and there he began playing guitar at age 16. In the early 1970's Darrell joined a southern gospel quartet called the Exodus Singers. This stint was followed by a 13-year hiatus from playing music. At age 39 he saw the Primitive Quartet perform and decided it was time to play music again - this time as a mandolin player. He played with the Old Time Gospel Singers and the Bluegrass Gospel Express before his move to Jacksonville, Florida. There he became active in the bluegrass music scene in the area and in 1994 he founded Gentle River. Darrell has recently retired from UPS and is now able to devote more of his time to music.

George Wells was born in Wartburg, Tennessee on March 5, 1948 and moved to Waycross, Georgia at the age of two. He plays guitar and sings lead and tenor for Gentle River. George has lived in Jacksonville, Florida since the age of 10, and is nearing the end of a career as a Firefighter there. He learned to play the cello while playing in school orchestras in Jacksonville and later played in the orchestra of First Baptist Church in downtown Jacksonville. During the 1970's and 1980's he sang in quartets in church and performed with the Proclaimers and refined his singing style with these quartets. In the mid 1990's George was introduced to bluegrass and adopted that style as his main musical interest. Bluegrass also helped provide George with a son-in-law in Darren Wainright, whom he and his daughter Amy first met at a Jacksonville jam session. George has an incredible pure voice that is an integral part of Gentle River's sound.

Darren Wainright was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 10, 1967. An outstanding multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, Darren plays guitar and banjo and sings lead and baritone vocals for Gentle River. Darren started playing banjo and guitar at age 13 and in only 2 years was playing banjo for Hubert Cox and the Southern Grass. He later spent 3 years with the Army before returning home to Jacksonville to earn a degree in political science from the University of North Florida. He has performed with several well-known bands in North Florida including National Flatpicking Champion Allen Shadd, Chubby Wise, Endless Highway, String Fever, and Oak Grove Bluegrass in addition to periodic gigs at Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando. He has written some great bluegrass and gospel songs, including “Surrounded by the Blues” which he sang on Shadd's solo recording and "Satilla, So Deep" which he sang on Scott Anderson's "Rivers". In 1994 he began performing with Gentle River.

Bruce Sheridan was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 10, 1949. He spent most of his childhood traveling around the United States, Europe and the Middle East with (his father was an Army Officer.) Bruce plays the electric Bass, doesn't sing (yet) and is generally useless except for maybe helping to set up the band's sound system. When Bruce was in high school, his parents gave him an acoustic 6-string guitar which he soon converted to a bass guitar by removing the top two strings. He was too lazy to learn chords. Bruce has been playing the bass off and on since then. He was bitten by the bluegrass bug in 1998 when a good friend dragged him off to a festival at the Twin Oaks Music Park at Hoboken, Georgia. Soon after he became acquainted with the Gentle River family, first substituting on bass for Jane Royal and then becoming a full member in 2001. Bruce and his adoring family reside in St. Marys, Georgia and he is employed by Lockheed Martin at the Submarine Base there.
We'd tell you what he does at that facility but then, as Bruce says, we'd have to kill you.

Scott Anderson was born in Palatka, Florida on January 26, 1965. A self-taught musician, singer, songwriter, and amateur photographer, pharmacist and Little League baseball coach, Scott has been playing banjo and guitar for over 20 years and also plays mandolin and bass. He began his serious musical career on banjo and guitar with First Light, a gospel group in his hometown of Palatka. In 1989, he joined the Bluegrass Parlor Band as a bass player and later moved over to banjo. In 1993, he helped found Endless Highway and with that band has performed throughout the Southeast, landed a coveted IBMA showcase spot, and produced one critically-acclaimed recording. In 1999, he began performing with Gentle River. In March of 2001 he recorded his first solo project "Rivers" featuring some of his original tunes and some of the finest acoustic musicians on the planet. He has also performed with Larry Rice, Chubby Wise, Vassar Clements, Bill Grant and Delia Bell, Blue Angel, George Custer, The Sno Rogers Band, and the Naples Philharmonic (yes, with a banjo!) among others and has been featured in Banjo Newsletter.
Gentle River is available to provide bluegrass and gospel music at your show, festival, or church and can also conduct banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, or vocal workshops.
